We are leading some research!

Business-as-usual is a terrible idea.

The current extractive nature of business is driving ecological break-down, while failing to create the conditions for everyone to thrive. Our economies are geared towards endless growth and profit maximisation, even as we crash through the boundaries of our beautiful, finite planet, and inequalities between us are dramatically rising.

There are high levels of public support for economic systems that prioritise health and well-being of people and planet. For example, 2 in 3 people across 17 countries of the G20 group surveyed agree that their country’s economy should prioritise the health and wellbeing of people and nature rather than focusing solely on profit and increasing wealth. 62% agree that a country’s economic success should be measured by the health and wellbeing of its citizens, not how fast the economy is growing. (Earth4All, 2024)

In business, new findings, after interviewing 400 leaders in the UK, show a surprisingly high commitment of leaders to post-growth principles with 86%. (If you are thinking “this can’t be true”, the research also shows they dramatically underestimate their peers’ support at only 53%). 92-93% believe businesses must operate in the balanced space between meeting social needs and respecting ecological limits. (Miles, J., et al. 2025)

That we should change our practice, and why we should do so, is broadly well understood.

But do we understand HOW we do that, in practice? What do organisations look like, if they do not focus solely on growth? What unique challenges do they face? And how might other organisations follow their lead?

These are the questions that enough.consulting is asking in a research piece we are leading, in collaboration with Tomorrow University. We will be interviewing CEOs and reviewing the literature to understand:

  • what do these leaders do differently?
  • how do they define success, if not through growth and profit?
  • what are the specific organisational challenges they face, particularly around the areas of purpose, culture, structure, and strategy?
  • how do we best support these leaders, and others who want to transform their organisations in this direction?

If you are the leader of an organisation, who defines success beyond growth, and would accept to dedicate 45min to an interview, we would be so very grateful!
Interviews will take place between mid-August and mid-September.
